5 Parenting Tips for Keeping Kids Safe in the Sun: The Benefits of Sunscreen

As parents, we all want to keep our kids safe, especially during summer months when they are more exposed to the sun’s heat and harmful UV rays. Sun protection is essential, but it can be hard to know what kind of protection is best for your children. In this blog post, we’ll cover 5 important tips that can help protect your child against the dangers of the sun while still having fun in the sun.

Sunscreen

The most important tip for protecting kids in the sun is sunscreen (duh)! This should obviously be at the top of your list when you’re getting ready to go outside to play with your kids. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply every two hours, and after swimming or sweating heavily.

Clothing

We get it–it’s hot out, and the last thing you want to do is put long sleeves on your kiddo. When possible, have them wear light breathable fabrics like cotton or linen that has tight weave patterns which can provide some natural UV protection from direct exposure. You should also opt for darker colors as these will absorb more sunlight than lighter hues.

Hats & Sunglasses

Another way to protect kids from UV rays is by having them wear hats and sunglasses whenever possible. Wide brimmed hats are ideal as they provide shade to not just their faces but their necks as well—which can be especially sensitive in younger children since infants under six months should not use sunscreen on their neck area at all due to delicate skin there.

Avoid Peak Hours

Try and plan outdoor activities around peak hours of sunlight (roughly 10am - 4pm) as much as possible so that your child won't be outside during those times where they get hit with the most intense UV exposure levels (and therefore highest risk!).

Shade It Up

If you do end up playing outside in peak hours then make sure you find an area with suitable shade with trees or umbrellas. That way you block off some of those harsh rays from coming in direct contact with your kids' skin — again keeping that delicate baby skin extra safe if applicable!

As parents, Summertime isn't the only time for preventing sunburn and skin damage! With a few helpful tips about sunscreen protection all year round, you can be sure to keep your little ones safe in even winter's chilliest months.
